Board of Directors
Mary Martin, NEER North’s president and founder, has been involved in horse rehabilitation and training for over 40 years. After serving as a board member of a Rhode Island-based rescue, in 2009, she started her own Massachusetts rescue, which received 501c3 status as New England Equine Rescue-North, Inc., in 2011. A licensed riding instructor and member of multiple horse-related organizations, Mary works with other equine rescues locally and nationally to advocate for equine welfare and to raise public awareness of and support for rescue activities.
Dr. Derek Cavatorta is an associate large animal veterinarian at SRH Veterinary Services in Ipswich, MA. He grew up in Rowley and attended Triton Regional High School. Dr. Cavatorta earned his B.S. degree in Animal Science from the University of Massachusetts before completing his DVM and earning a Ph.D. in Immunology at Cornell University. His dissertation contributed to the understanding of how horses respond to vaccinations.
Susan G. McQuade, NEER North’s treasurer, has a degree in Finance and has worked as an independent investment executive for Raymond James and financial advisor at Wells Fargo. She is a Massachusetts Notary Public. A native New Englander, she is a member of the New Hampshire Hunter Jumper Association, has two horses of her own, and volunteers at The Bradford Equestrian Center and the Essex Equestrian Center.
Melissa Coe is the director and president of Lucky’s Legacy, a privately funded equine sanctuary in Epping, New Hampshire. A former board member of E.P.O.N.A. Horse Rescue in New Hampshire, she is employed as a project manager at Consigli Construction, and has worked previously at Veterans Development Corporation, William A. Berry & Son, the Berry Fund Charitable Foundation, and the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Deb Bruno, NEER North’s secretary, is an active equestrienne who rides at Ascot Equestrian Center in Ipswich, MA. She is employed as a medical secretary and receptionist.
Elena Jespersen is a board member of Theater in the Open in Newburyport and a former board member of the Wentworth Hunt Club.
